We Wear the T-Shirts, but Do We Know the History of Grunge Music?
Walk the streets today and it doesn’t take long to find a Nirvana shirt, the band that comes to mind when anyone says “grunge.” Hell, the said person wearing the shirt is on their way to a yoga class and being all Namaste and sh*t. Not that there is anything wrong with that. But it is strange, no(?), to see a band embraced in a way it could have never predicted. I digress. You’re here to discover grunge—a genre that roared onto the music scene with rebellious energy and unapologetic attitude. And with that, I present you the history, key bands, and lasting impact of this influential movement.
At the beginning
Washington, specifically Seattle, is considered the birth place for the subgenre – Grunge – which popped out the belly in the mid-1980s. Piecing together influences of punk, heavy metal, as well as indie/new wave bands, Grunge became a voice for disenchanted youth, channeling their frustrations and angst into a powerful sonic wave that addressed issues like social alienation, self-doubt, abuse, neglect, betrayal, social and emotional isolation, addiction, psychological trauma and, of course, the desire for freedom.
In the beginning, the record label Sub Pop helped spread the genre around the Washington area, as the owners of the label marketed the style encouraging the term “grunge” be used by the media. Once the 1990s arrived, the idea spread to other states including California and beyond, and across the Pacific to countries like Australia.
And the term “Grunge,” well that has been used since the 1960s (believe it or not) but a variety of disc jockeys and music critics looking to describe any band with a dirty sound.
However, the Northwest bands of the mid-1980s to 1990s definitely took the idea and ran with it. Strapped for cash, these bands would offer a distorted sound turned up as loud as possible backed behind vocals that sounded as if someone was throat checking the person to create something doable, and cheap when recording, instead of polished and expensive.

And now, time to talk about the bands you probably know who helped grow the subgenre to air on MTV and cause people across the nation, even when it was cold, to wear flannel. Fronted by the enigmatic Kurt Cobain, Nirvana burst onto the scene with their groundbreaking album Nevermind. Or on soccer moms who probably listened to the album Nevermind “back in the day” as they watch their kids play and sip on their Pumpkin Spice Latte? I doubt it.
