Solid Tune for Thanksgiving by Punk Rock Band Pennywise
I find Thanksgiving a funny holiday. As time goes on, it seems America is eager to get rid of it, not for the right reasons, but to get to the “Christmas season” faster. Sure, if America banded together and talked about the truth in how we treated the indigenous people without getting too worried about losing our “traditions,” maybe then I would be open to displacing the holiday. However, at its core, and despite the past, the idea of the holiday is amazing, isn’t it? The idea is that we should give a day to say “thanks” for what we have and the people who surround us. But, as the saying goes, we stuff our faces to give “thanks” only in preparation for the shopping deals to follow.
With each year, as the decorations come out sooner and the debate on “Happy Holidays” vs “Merry Christmas” surges in the hearts of every Karen who doesn’t have a life, I do my best to turn up a song that reminds me of what Thanksgiving should be about – “Thanksgiving” by Pennywise. Off their album Yesterdays released in 2014, the song offers stellar lyrics about showing appreciation for your life, the things you have, and the people that surround you. My favorite line is, “Think about all that you have, Not about what you can’t get.” Something I hope we can all hold as shopping deals fill our eyes, and we do our best to avoid the rage that ensues in each parent hoping to buy their children’s happiness. And they say, “Punks are monsters.” Don’t make me puke.
